The Washington Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (WPYO), a division of Washington Philharmonic Orchestra, Inc., will provide the opportunity for gifted and talented students to be involved in extraordinary music education through its orchestral training and performance program. WPYO recruits students from the greater Washington Metro region including Virginia and Maryland, primarily of middle school through high school age and of all ethnic and demographic backgrounds. Through its educational and music activities, it promotes and encourages the development of the life-lessons needed to become a successful member of society by building a strong sense of character, discipline, commitment and maturity in its students. In addition, WPYO fosters the appreciation of the musical arts and education in the greater Washington Metropolitan community and throughout the world.
Musicians are required to participate in their school instrumental music programs and must take private music instruction. Performance opportunities provide a wide range of meaningful experiences from September through June each year.
The WPYO depends on the generosity of patrons to make programming possible.
